Laguna Beach Live! presented its annual Musical Petting Zoo at the Boys and Girls Club on October 22nd. Laguna Beach High School student musicians introduced their instruments, giving club members an opportunity to hear, touch and play instruments, often for the first time. After exploring the violin, baritone saxophone, trombone, clarinet, and trumpet, some young club members rushed to get their own school instruments to demonstrate for their peers.
Internationally trained singer and actress Maria Elena Infantino demonstrates proper breathing technique for members of the Boys and Girls Club. Performing for more than 40 children, the singer introduced words and songs in Italian, Spanish, French and English, before presenting her sold out concert at the Laguna Art Museum of songs by Edith Piaf. Laguna Beach Live! sponsors teaching artist and musician visits to the canyon branch of the Boys and Girls Club every Thursday afternoon.
Members of the Boys and Girls Club dance along to the raucous bluegrass tunes of The Budrows, featuring Jason Farthing on gas can banjo, former Boys and Girls Club member Macarena Rivera on lead vocals and washboard, and Jesse Boden on harmonica. Dozens of children participated in the concert, singing, dancing and accompanying the group on percussion instruments.
The local music non-profit organization Laguna Beach Live! sponsored the concert as part of their summer educational outreach at the Club. Laguna Beach Live! brings musicians and teaching artists to the Boys and Girls Club throughout the school year thanks to grants from the Assistance League of Laguna Beach, Laguna Beach City Community Assistance Fund and the Festival of Arts Foundation.
On Thursday, May 14th, the balalaika trio Firebird performed for the children at the Boys and Girls Club as part of the weekly educational outreach program of Laguna Beach Live! Playing music from Russia and Ukraine, Firebird also told animated folk stories and encouraged students to touch the traditional instruments.
Guitarist Nicholas Yrizarry performs for students at the Boys and Girls Club as part of Laguna Beach Live’s free education outreach. He presented a history of guitar music, from early Lute pieces to hard rock, on a variety of classic instruments. Nick is also the owner of Laguna Sound Studio and Recording Lounge in Laguna Beach.
